"I wanted to create a gentle, restful mood, and to create a very loose
effect, with the contours of the body hinted at rather than
being defined. I have allowed the initial pencil sketch to
show through the watercolour washes.
The loose style is echoed in the lost edges of the arm and cheek,
and the way I have shown the contours of the body using free washes of warm and cool
colours.
On the woman's hip and foot, I have used hard edged washes which were allowed to dry before applying
the next colour: a light wash of a flesh tone then another wash in a deeper rosy colour,
followed by a warm mauve. The original painting was created using only three colours,
Yellow Ochre, Alizarin Crimson and Prussian Blue."
