"I liked the slightly dreamlike air of stillness and mystery that
seems to lie over the deserted garden, which has a feeling of waiting for something or someone.
It reminded me of the gardens in my favourite childhood books:
'The Secret Garden', 'Tom's Midnight Garden',
and the topiary garden described in the 'Green Knowe' books. The
steps lead the viewer's eye into the distance,
seeming to invite you to explore what lies beyone the hedge.
This was my first experiment with pointillism, inspired by
Seurat. I used a very small range of colours, mostly Cadmium yellow
and Prussian blue with a little Crimson lake. In some parts of the painting I have used pure
colours of yellow and blue instead of mixing them on the paper to make greens, so
the viewer's eye can mix the colours. "
