Afternoon

"My work explores the visual and symbolic qualities of natural forms, such as flowers and plants. My images fill the canvas with pattern and colour, focussing on the contrasts between the deep, dark spaces between foliage and the lighter tones and abstracted forms of the subject. More recently, I have begun a series of paintings that investigate the tensions between basic elements, such as water and air. My interest in this theme is informed by twenty years as a landscape gardener.
Through the exploration of colour, paint, texture and form, I can work through equivalent ideas on the canvas. I see my work within the tradition of modernist painting and continue to reference artists such as Monet and Matisse."
