"I like to make a painting or drawing into a kind of map of what I see when I look at the subject. I start with line, because for me, that's the most important thing. I think line can tell you everything you need to know about form, shape and relative positions in space. It's a magical thing - people say 'there are no lines in nature', yet line can describe, express and communicate so much about nature.
Over a framework of lines, I can block in tones or colours. I feel that if the linework is b, definite and accurate enough (where I want it, rather than photographically accurate), then I can add the tones or colours in quite a loose, simplified way. For me, this emphasizes the two-dimensions of the picture plane, and best expresses the experience of observing and setting down what I see."

Lynda Poole August 2003
