(Biology) the cultivation of bacteria, tissue cells, etc. in a medium containing nutrients.
To maintain cells in conditions suitable for growth.
'Culture':The customs, institutions and achievements of
a particular nation, people or group.
Trying to mix these two concepts together to imply graphically the
first meaning and symbolically the second!
('Nature' being the medium providing 'humans' with the conditions suitable for the growth of our culture.)
Nature in this painting is represented by the calmer, but vibrant, blues, turquoises and greens. Its beauty and richness presents us with the ideal medium in which to grow. Cell-like strands of the loudest reds and oranges (fig. humans) cover the surface, giving a feeling of growth, expansion and invasion.
Real hay (and other bonding materials) was used to pre-texture the surface prior to painting, to achieve an organic feel. And the final touch was to 'bath' the finished piece with a generous layer of the glossiest acrylic varnish to give a wet, living look to the 'culture'."
