"My working method of using oil and acrylic is the same as when I painted using watercolours, that of a building up of transparent and opaque layers. I like to have several projects underway at any time, preferably an abstract/representational mix of different sized canvases, with small primed boards to hand for colours I can't bear to waste. The boards can be the exciting starting point for larger, more considered works, growing from one colour, knife stroke or the texture of paint that has become "sticky". I find the illusory aspect of painting magical and am always attempting to create the illusion of depth and distance to achieve symmetry and balance.
Paintings evolve in diffrent ways - either from ideas that have formed over time or are inspired by a particular place/weather condition - and those that start with one colour on a blank canvas. The last is a sort of quest, reviewing, modifying and refining the painting over days, sometimes weeks, until I find what I am looking for and not knowing exactly what that is until I get there. It's enthralling!".
