Born and raised in northern Greece, lived in the US for 12 years, I have now settled in the UK. I am predominantly a self-taught artist that has gone through several maturation stages of learning to work with materials on one hand, and discovering a way of expressing myself that feels comfortable, natural, and deeply personal on the other.
To this end I have concentrated on oils and have studied basic colour and design theory through books and university courses I have taken. I have three degrees in the physical and biological sciences and my work reflects my constant struggle from a scientist's point of view to get my basic facts straight which include the physics of light and colour, and the psychobiological effects of colour on people.
Having kept a keen interest in the countless debates and conceptual plagues of art through the ages by studying art theory and philosphy, I'm able to view my art in the wider context of what is already out there, as well as the context of culture, society and and spiritual world of the human being.
My biggest influences are Van Gogh and Gauguin for their innate ability to balance everything in a painting, back in the days of modernism when painting was all about the image. I admire Warhol and Duchamp for their courage to question what is art in the first place, therefore opening new possibilities and outlets.
What is my art? Is it a pop-art/graffiti version of Van Gogh?..it sounds both vain and simplistic. It is up to the critics to say. Whatever the case, I feel at home with it, having overcome many practical hurdles with the materials in the past. Now that the formalist problems of my art have been largely resolved I have started focusing on using my painting more and more as a vehicle of communication rather than solely a self-exploration.
