Neill Murphy

Neill Murphy is an Irish Artist, born in Blackrock in South Dublin in April 1968. Neill grew up in Dublin and also in Bray, County Wicklow.
In 1987, Neill took up playing the bass guitar. From the ages of 19 to 27, he played and toured as a bass player with different bands around Ireland. In 1993, at the age of 25, Neill discovered painting.
Having enrolled in a local art class in his town, Neill first started using chalk pastel as his first chosen medium and then later on, moved to using watercolours. Neil started to learn to paint by copying his favourite artists - Vincent Van Gogh, Monet and Cezanne. He learned how they painted their bright vibrant colours. He also learned about their lives, and how they sacrificed and struggled for their art.
By 1997, Neill felt confident enough to start using oil paints using this medium to work on his own compositions. In February 1999, Neill left his home town in Ireland to go to England where he looked for galleries who would exhibit his work.
For the last four years, Neill has lived in Bristol, Cambridge, Glasgow and Exeter: which has been his base for two years.
Neill has sold paintings to many private collectors around the world, including: Germany, Ireland, England, USA, New Zealand and France. His most avid collector is an eccentric French man who keeps many of his paintings in a castle in Kirkcudbrightshire in Scotland. Neill has also exhibited twice in the "Affordable Art Fair" in Battersea in London.
